RIGHT OF REPLY BY THE MNLA TO THE ARTICLE OF HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH
Thursday, May 3, 2012 11:54 p.m.

Right of reply to the article entitled "Mali: War Crimes by Northern Rebels. Armed Groups Commit Use Child, written by Corinne Dufka (Senior Africa researcher) from Human Rights Watch on April 30, 2012, “ by the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad-MNLA.

One has to be either under-informed or supporter to write and publish an article of this importance by its content and range of information and this from unverified data. A job, which in principle should be developed with all the methodology required in order to respect the principle of neutrality and scientific objectivity.
After having read the content of the document which addresses the issue of human rights on the Azawad territory, the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad-MNLA expresses dismay and cannot believe that HRW, an organization recognized worldwide, would have let themselves be manipulated by third parties and is also surprised by the danger of the accusations they would qualify as "baseless" especially when coming from Human Right Watch, from whom the populations of Azawad expect Justice and Restitution of the violations of human rights which they have been victims of for over the past 50 years. We deplore the failure and non-respect of the ethics used by the "author-researcher" who limited its research to Bamako although the field of reference is Azawad.
The MNLA takes note of the charges in this document but also notices having been taken for armed groups existing under the tutelage of Mali, and with whom they do not share neither objectives nor methods of action. For this purpose the MNLA requires to be distinguished from these groups from whom they have distanced themselves.

Nevertheless and in first instance, the MNLA commits itself to conduct its own investigation in relation to these charges. And secondly to provide a detailed report on the violation of rights suffered by the population of Azawad during these past weeks and will send this report to all organizations that defend human rights. Organizations they invite to come, if they wish, to observe and testify in full neutrality.

The Movement wishes to remind all that they are very concerned about the sacredness of human lives as well as to the fundamental human rights and completely support the various treaties relative to the protection of human rights, more specifically on the territory of the Azawad.

We invite all donors and the direction of HRW to look closely at the conduct of its personnel in mission and encourage them to get to the bottom of any act presumed or proven on the violation of human rights, in Mali as well as in Azawad, to guarantee the principle of equal treatment.
